Benefits of nickel implementation in HDG

Significant growth in producing high silicon steels since the 1980s, has resulted in an increasing interest of application of nickel in hot dip galvanizing. Increasing application of nickel in HDG resulted in substantial reduction of zinc consumption per ton of galvanized steel.

Applying nickel to a hot zinc alloy enables reduction of zinc coating thickness, which is especially meaningful in case of reactive steel grades.

The reduction of zinc coating thickness improves zinc consumption efficiency, at the significant rate of 5% to 20% per month (depending on the steel items parameters and the level of technology of the HDG plant).

Alloy Additions to the Kettle and Their Purposes - Nickel

Nickel is commonly used for metal alloys with a high melting point, it is denser than zinc, and has a higher melting point. Nickel is most commonly added to the galvanizing kettle to help control reactive steels by reducing the intermetallic formation.

Introduction

Use of nickel in galvanizing process has proven to be the most effective method dealing with the problems associated with hot dip galvanizing of silicon containing steels.

Nickel has a known effect on the Zn-Fe reaction.

Thickness reduction for reactive steel grades (Sandeline effect). Nickel lowers the Sandeline curve on high silicon reactive steels.
